Dating tips, Getting Ready for the First Date.

Basically, there are 4 things you want to accomplish on a first date:

1. Make a good impression

2. Be relaxed

3. Get to know the person

4. Enjoy the evening

I know this all sounds incredibly obvious, but sometimes the details escape you.

If your date is after work, it is usually a fairly good idea to bring your "date clothes" with you if you don't have time to change at home. You may not be a slob and under ordinary circumstances, you look like a million bucks at the end of the day, but fate has a twisted sense of humor. The day of the date is the one day that you will get caught in the rain, splashed by a mud puddle and spill your morning coffee all over you sparkling white shirt.

Athena: Be sure that your outfit for the date is neat and tidy. If you bring your clothes to work, pack them carefully or bring clothes that travel well. An incredibly wrinkled, sparkling white designer shirt will be remembered for the wrinkles, not the designers label. Ladies, remember to bring extra panty hose with you. That huge run will be remembered long after your great legs are forgotten.

Just like you want to take special notice of your clothing, you'll want to pay special attention to your personal hygiene. Bring your toothbrush, a comb, a travel size mouthwash and a roll of Certs or Breath Assure or something. Nothing kills your witty repartee like bad breath. If you can't get home before your big night and happen to belong to a gym near your job, go take a shower.

Today may not be the day to have a sausage and pepper sandwich at lunch. The spinach salad may be out as well if it gets stuck in your teeth. Check them. Remember, the wonderful aroma from your favorite lunch place doesn't smell good on your breath hours later. Keeping a supply of toiletries in your car or desk will assure you have everything you need on hand to help you look just right. An electric razor or portable curling iron can really make a difference after a long day at the salt mines.

Okay... so now you look great but you can't relax. What am I going to say? What are we going to do? You can relieve most of those fears by being prepared. If you are going to lunch or dinner, scout the place out first. Get a feel for what the appropriate dress is and how to get there. As far as conversation is concerned, read a newspaper or watch the news: that should give you something to talk about.

Remember the X factor, leave yourself plenty of time. If you don't, your biggest client will call and want to talk your ear off. Confirming the meeting time shortly before the date gives both parties the chance to adjust the meeting time, if necessary. It is a lot easier to make a bad impression, then to make a good impression one of the easiest ways to make a bad impression is to be late. There are no tricks or special gimmicks. JUST DON'T BE LATE.

If it is not ancient history, you may want to review your high school or college yearbook, if your memory needs refreshing. Past school experiences or characters you met along the way, make good conversation starters. Think of questions to ask your date. People love to talk about themselves. This also puts more of the conversation burden on the other party. When you are composing your list of questions think of the answers that you would give should your date reverse the question on you. Makes sure you can answer effectively any embarrassing personal details you wish to impart. The answers to "Why did you get divorced?" or some other commonly asked personal questions do NOT require long detailed blow by blow descriptions. There will be time for that if the relationship develops. This is not the best time to get into an impassioned diatribe about what a @#$! your ex is.

I don't know if I agree about the yearbook idea, but preparing to have something to talk about is a good idea. Remember that the important thing is to LISTEN.

Most of all try to relax and have fun, feeling confident that you have arranged everything. I bet you will have a terrific night with someone new and interesting.
